FOUNDATION OF THE ECCLESIAL MOVEMENT OF ELDERLY PEOPLE

VIDA ASCENDENTE PERU

In Peru, this Movement was founded by Sr. Germaine Ogée Pavin HCM on April 10, 1979, and recognized by Monsignor Juan Landázuri Rickets OFM, Archbishop of Lima and Primate of Peru, on April 7, 1979.

It was also recognized by the Peruvian Episcopal Conference on March 4, 2010, and registered with the Directorate of Adults and Seniors of the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations on June 24, 2011.

SITUATION OF OLDER PERSONS

In Peru, there is a national plan for the elderly in which people aged 60 and over are included. It is based on the conception of aging as a process that begins at the birth of the person, but also on the search for a better quality of life for the elderly.

Our elderly population represents 10% of the total population of 32 million inhabitants, presenting a process of feminization of aging due to the longer life expectancy of women than men.

DEVELOPED ACTIVITIES

Before the pandemic

We have held national meetings every 2 years. Thus, we started in Lima with the presence of brothers from the departments of Cajamarca, Moquegua and Tacna.

Subsequently, the meeting was held in the city of Cajamarca, following meetings in Lima city neighborhoods such as Carabayllo, Pueblo Libre and San Miguel.

The objective of these meetings was to analyze the problems encountered by the groups of each locality and to discuss possible solutions, alternating with conferences of priests who guide our spiritual growth and the academic tasks of counselors, therapists in mental relaxation, etc.

During the 2020, 2021 and 2022 pandemic

This is a serious crisis that we have gone through in Peru and around the world, given the impossibility of meeting in person.  To stay connected, we used cell phones and computers with the invaluable support of our children and grandchildren.

Thus, our meetings have been held to date, via Zoom on Wednesdays of each week at 7pm.

We develop a calendar of activities from February to December, such as Friendship Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, the anniversary of our national independence.

In October, the feast of the Lord of Miracles is very important in Peru;  thousands of people accompany the procession gathering a very large crowd around the statue of the Lord of Pachacamilla, which visits the main neighborhoods of Lima; the festival is also repeated nationally and in many places in America.

Nous célébrons également la fête de la Toussaint et en décembre Noël.

We also celebrate All Saints' Day and, in December, Christmas.

The permanent support of our spiritual advisor, Father Augusto Meloni, is important; it is he who shares and explains the readings and the Gospel of the day.

We also have the precious collaboration of Father Osvaldo Montferrand, former spiritual advisor of Latin America, with interviews and conversations of great importance.

PREACHING THE GOSPEL AND STRUCTURE OF THE ROMAN CURIA

On June 25, Father Osvaldo Montferrand offered us via Zoom a very important conversation entitled "Preaching the Gospel and the structure of the Roman Curia".

The Catholic Church around the world has learned that Pope Francis has formalized his long-awaited reform of the Roman Curia, which modernizes the Church in its broad goals of evangelization.

It reduces to 16 dicasteries, offices, departments and other denominations existing in the Vatican.

We highlight the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, the Dicastery for the Promotion of Integral Human Development.

Since his election in March 2013, Pope Francis has made the reform of the Roman Curia his priority.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's secretary of state, said the reform seeks to emphasize the Church's missionary conversion and emphasizes the Gospel.

It will benefit our Church and those who conform to it on the path of evangelization.

WORLD DAY OF GRANDPARENTS AND OLDER PERSONS

Pope Francis has instituted on the third Sunday of July: "World Day  of Grand Parents and Elderly People", in the midst of the Year of the Family,  which means for all of us a privilege: the Church gives us its attention, helps us to recognize that old age is a gift we receive from God and that the capitalized experience of our "accumulated youth",  guides and advises younger generations, starting with our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who are beginning the journey to where we have been.

Let us ask the Lord to grant us a healthy and active old age and to strengthen our spirituality with the power of our prayer.

At the initiative of Peru, supported by the delegates of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, a motion was presented to the Assembly proposing a date for the International Day of our Movement: thus, on 23 November, our motion, after a debate, was passed, the Assembly approving that the "International Day of Ascending Life" would take place on 1 October.  Member countries being invited to celebrate the event.

"I'M WITH YOU EVERY DAY" PROGRAM

Vida Ascendente celebrated the First World Day of Grandparents and Older Persons, whose theme was "I AM WITH YOU EVERY DAY", a phrase that manifests the closeness of the Lord and the Church to every old person; to inaugurate this program, we located, in a marginal neighborhood of Callao (constitutional province), an elderly man Mr. Santos Rincón Vega, who lived alone, abandoned and plunged into extreme poverty, like many in Peru and in the world.

We offer our companionship, help with food, clothing, bedding, toiletries, and the words of the gospel; We considered getting him into a hospice. That's how we managed to get him into the hospice "Casa Hogar Santa María de la Caridad".  Today, he enjoys health care, food, housing and the company of people his age. This action is not the only one, we continue to see other cases and for this our financial reserves from the contributions of our brothers of Vie Ascendente and the realization of activities, will support the expenses incurred.
